Tomorrow morning I’ll be hitting the road bright and early to drive 864 miles with my family.
This will be the longest road trip we’ve taken with both our kids (ages 4 and 1 1/2). We’re going from Boise, Idaho to Frazier Park, California (south of Bakersfield). About 14 hours. Should I be this excited?
My parents instilled in me a love of road trips from an early age. Growing up we used to drive from our home in El Paso, Texas to our aunt and uncle’s in Riverside, California–all in one 16-hour day. I loved it! I used to pack my bag about two weeks ahead of time because I was looking forward to it so much. Once we got there we would go to Disneyland, swim, go out to eat, watch movies… But the getting-there part wasn’t the only thing I enjoyed about the trip. I loved the open road (and still do! it’s therapeutic somehow), car music (like Mama’s & the Papa’s), going to restaurants, car games, and snacks.
It’s neat to have the role of parent now. I’m having fun thinking about the reaction of my sons to things like stopping at McDonald’s for a milkshake and opening up the Cars cars I’m going to surprise them with. Then they’ll get to see their grandmother and her cabin in the mountains and go to the beach. They’re going to love it.
On the downside, I will be without my Keurig for one whole week. Yes, I am really roughing it on this trip. I bought some ground Tully’s Madison Blend, so I’ll be okay. Plus, I get to drink delicious tea with my mother-in-law. I will miss my Keurig, but absence I’m sure will make the heart grow fonder.
I’m hoping to get at least a couple blog posts up while I’m away, but if things are eerily silent, you’ll know why. Enjoy your K-Cups for me, okay?
